Each year on Thanksgiving, the non-profit organization Young Men’s Ultimate Weekend hosts an event called “Operation T Day.”
Originally created by a team of Bay Area men over two decades ago, the event feeds hundreds of families in San Francisco on Thanksgiving. Approximately 50 – 70 people show up each year to package food into boxes for two hours at a local community center in San Rafael. There’s live music and tons of fun as families work together to participate in this “higher purpose” community activity.
Best of all, this event is a great way for children to develop the virtues of empathy and service. The sooner they experience the benefits of volunteering, the sooner they’ll more likely be willing to help contribute to doing household chores and being a productive member of their community.
