Built on Purpose/MDI Edition. Staying Steady While You Transition

By

Last month we focused on two foundational shifts during a time of career uncertainty.

First: separating your worth from your current work situation, recognizing that a job loss or stalled search does not define who you are.

Second: creating structure through a simple 30-day plan, so you are not drifting through the process but moving forward with intention.

Together, these create steadiness and direction. This month, we build on that foundation by focusing on how you show up and how you take action.

Part 1: Rebuilding Signal when Energy is Low.

There’s a part of the job-search process that most men don’t talk about. It’s not the resume, nor is it the interview prep. It’s what happens internally after weeks, even months, of trying. Over time, energy changes and what once felt simple begins to feel heavy. Natural things begin to feel forced.

And whether you realize it or not, that shift shows up. Not in obvious ways, something you can easily point to. It will show in how you speak, how you carry yourself, the different way you show up in conversations.

Others may not know your situation, but they can feel your presence. This is what we call ‘signal.’ Signal isn’t what you say about your experience. It’s what others experience when they interact with you.
“Oh, but I’m very good at compartmentalizing,” you say.  I’ve long since lost track of how many times I’ve heard this.  Unless you’ve been through some undercover spy training, you’re bound to  communicate what you’re feeling.  It happens to the best of us.

When energy is low, signal weakens. Your ability hasn’t changed but your state has: it’s not a mindset issue, it’s about depletion.

The way forward is not to force confidence. Rather, it is to rebuild signal, one step at a time. Start with structure.

Part 2: Start with Structure

Give your week a rhythm, so each day has purpose. It isn’t about staying busy but rather staying engaged. Reconnect with people, even when it feels uncomfortable.

Not every conversation will lead somewhere, but each one rebuilds presence. Practice your story. Not perfectly. Simply. Clearly. So when the moment comes, you are not searching for words, you are speaking from direction.

You have to take care of your physical state, too, because the body carries stress before the mind understands it. Here is the truth: opportunities do not come because someone needs a job. They come because someone shows they are ready for responsibility and that readiness isn’t about pretending everything’s fine. It’s showing that you’re still here, still capable and still moving forward.

If your energy feels low right now, don’t withdraw: simplify. Focus on the next conversation, next step and next action. You do not need to feel confident to move forward. You need to move forward to feel confident. Presence returns before opportunity does. And once it does, others begin to see what was always there.

Part 3: Action Restores Energy

At some point in a career transition, most men begin to feel stuck. Not because they are not trying. But because their effort is not producing results. Applications go out. Nothing comes back. And over time, it becomes harder to keep going. This is where many men fall into a quiet trap. They wait to feel motivated before they act. But motivation is not what creates movement. Action is.

I had a trainer who often said, “Action preceeds motivation,” meaning Stop sitting around and waiting for inspiration.  Get off your ass, now!

Action is what restores energy and it doesn’t have to be massive or perfect action either. Just simple, consistent action that creates forward motion, momentum, even when the outcome is uncertain.

When you take action, something important happens: you interrupt the cycle of waiting. It’s a shift away from reacting towards leading yourself. You begin to see progress again, even if it’s small. A conversation scheduled. A response received. A clearer sense of direction. These are not small things. They are signs that momentum is returning.

But there is something that makes action far more powerful and that is accountability.

In MDI, we do not do this work alone. We have a buddy. Someone who knows our commitments. Someone who checks in. Someone who helps us stay honest. This matters even more in a job search. Because it is easy to say you will take action. It is harder to follow through when no one is watching. Choose a man you trust. Connect once a week. Talk through what you said you would do. What you actually did. What got in the way. And what you will commit to next. Not to judge. Not to fix. But to stay in motion. Action creates movement. A buddy creates consistency. Together, they create momentum. The goal is not to do more. It is to do what matters. Instead of sending applications everywhere, focus on the right opportunities. Instead of waiting for replies, start conversations. Instead of overthinking your next step, take one. Then take another. Energy follows movement. Not the other way around. You may not feel ready. You may not feel confident. But readiness is built through action, not before it. If you are in this place right now, keep it simple. What is one action you can take today? Do that. Then tell your buddy. And do it again tomorrow. You do not need to solve everything. You need to keep moving. Because action does more than create opportunity. It brings
