Soy Javier, conocido como Hernández en MDI,1 integrante del primer equipo en español dentro de la división Atlas. Nací en México y actualmente vivo en Canadá junto con mi esposa y nuestras dos hijas. Aquí he encontrado seguridad, pero también el desafío de reconstruir estabilidad y forjar bases sólidas para el futuro de mi familia.
Al llegar a Canadá, en plena pandemia, descubrí una necesidad inesperada: el contacto con otros hombres. Rodeado de mujeres —mi familia y las primeras amistades en su mayor parte mujeres que nos apoyaron en la adaptación cultural—, valoré profundamente esa ayuda, pero sentía la ausencia de vínculos masculinos. Siempre había anhelado un mentor. Mi padre ha sido un gran hombre en mi vida, pero no en ese rol específico.
Buscando en internet, me topé con MDI. Un mes más tarde ya formaba parte de un equipo en inglés. La experiencia fue enriquecedora y puedo decir que llegué al mejor equipo que me pudo haber tocado con grandes hombres a quienes admiro y aprecio, aunque por otro lado fue un reto difícil: mi nivel de inglés limitaba mi comprensión de expresiones, bromas y matices culturales. Con el tiempo mejoré, pero nunca logré expresarme con total fluidez durante ese tiempo. Me preguntaba entonces: ¿por qué no existe un equipo en español?
La idea de crear un equipo piloto en nuestro idioma fue tomando forma. La compartí con mi equipo, que me apoyó aunque deseaba que continuara con ellos. En 2023 presenté la propuesta a los líderes de mi división, quienes me dieron luz verde. Empecé a contactar a cada hombre con nombre en español que aparecía en el mapa de MDI.
Entre las respuestas llegó un apoyo clave: Carlos Segura, a quien tuve la fortuna de conocer anteriormente. Segura era ideal para sumar fuerzas, siendo bilingüe y con más experiencia que yo en MDI. Juntos traducimos materiales, adaptamos conceptos y dimos inicio a las primeras reuniones.
Al principio éramos dos. Después, gracias a un shuffle de equipos, llegaron nuevos integrantes, a los que se fueron sumando más invitados. Hoy somos diez hombres en este equipo pionero en español, respaldado por la división Atlas. Incluso se implementó un sistema de traducción simultánea que nos permite participar activamente en juntas con equipos en inglés.
El camino no ha sido sencillo. Ha requerido paciencia, esfuerzo y creatividad para tropicalizar la ideología de MDI a nuestra lengua y cultura. Sin embargo, lo que comenzó como un sueño es ya una realidad tangible: el primer equipo en español de MDI.
Nuestro nombre es Quema tus Naves (Burn Your Ships), evocando la decisión de Hernán Cortés de destruir sus barcos para que su tripulación no tuviera otra opción que avanzar. Ese mismo espíritu nos inspira: comprometernos con nuestra transformación como hombres, sin vuelta atrás.
Quiero aprovechar este espacio para invitar a todos los hermanos de MDI, en cualquier división o región: Si hablas español, considera unirte a nosotros. Y si conoces a alguien que pueda estar interesado, comparte esta invitación.
Estamos construyendo un legado. Lo que inició como un anhelo personal hoy es una puerta abierta para muchos más.

The Birth of the First Spanish-Speaking Team in MDI

My name is Javier, known in MDI2 as Hernández, and I am part of the first Spanish-speaking team within the Atlas division. I was born in Mexico and currently live in Canada with my wife and our two daughters. Here I have found safety, but also the challenge of rebuilding stability and laying solid foundations for my family’s future.
When I arrived in Canada, in the middle of the pandemic, I discovered an unexpected need: connecting with other men. Surrounded by women—my family and the first friendships we built, most of whom were women who supported us in adapting to a new culture—I deeply valued their help, but I felt the absence of male bonds. I had always longed for a mentor. My father has been a great man in my life, but not in that specific role.
Searching online, I came across MDI. A month later, I was already part of a men’s team in English. The experience was enriching, and I can say I joined the best team I could have hoped for, with great men whom I admire and appreciate. Yet, it was also a challenge: my English skills limited my ability to fully understand expressions, jokes, and cultural nuances. Over time I improved, but I never reached the level of fluency I wished for. I began to wonder: why isn’t there a team in Spanish?
The idea of creating a pilot team in our language started to take shape. I shared it with my team, who supported me, even though they wanted me to stay. In 2023, I presented the proposal to the leaders of my division, and they gave me the green light. I began reaching out to every man with a Spanish name I found on the MDI map. Among the responses came a key ally: Carlos Segura, whom I had previously been fortunate to meet. Segura was the perfect partner to join forces—bilingual and more experienced than I was in MDI. Together, we translated materials, adapted concepts, and launched our first meetings.
At the beginning, there were just two of us. Later, thanks to a team shuffle, new members arrived, and others were invited to join. Today we are ten men in this pioneering Spanish-speaking team, supported by the Atlas division. We even implemented a system of simultaneous translation that allows us to participate actively in meetings with English-speaking teams.
The journey has not been easy. It has required patience, effort, and creativity to adapt the MDI ideology to our language and culture. Yet what began as a dream is now a tangible reality: the first Spanish-speaking team in MDI.
Our name is Quema tus Naves (Burn Your Ships), evoking Hernán Cortés’s decision to destroy his ships so that his crew had no choice but to move forward. That same spirit inspires us: to commit fully to our transformation as men, with no turning back.
