Still reading Mr. O’keefe, still believing, still drinking, and still digging. I keep coming back, I keep doing the work, because it’s worth it.

    Great article, O’Keeffe.

Thanks for all the details. I didn’t discover the SMW until 2005, so I had only heard bits and pieces of all that history over the years.

But the weekend DID totally change my life and the lives of hundreds of men that I’ve known, so I felt inspired to create this song to honor Justin’s passing, fyi.

    Thankyou — A. Justin Sterling

  3. You gave a very good history of the Sterling Institute of Relationship. I would add a little more about the courses (Covid forced them to go online but they might be in-person now), making clear that the Weekends are continuing (led by Leo Anshutz), and the newest evolution: Ignite. Ignite is organized by men who volunteered for high leadership positions but “stepped away” from the Institute. They charge $100 for a 1-year membership, which includes clinics and two courses that support men to practice the wisdom of the Men’s Weekend (started Sept. 2025). What’s interesting is that Ignite is open to both SMW graduates and men who never took the Weekend.
I did my Men’s Weekend in April 2000 in Los Angeles and immediately went on to a Men’s Team. I was around MDI as it formed. I attended various trainings (Team Leader Training [where they discussed CPRs], Alpha Leader Training, etc.) and took several Men’s Courses.
Being on a Men’s Team is a good experience. You get to practice holding standards, Fun & Physicals (competition that can get pretty creative), reinforcing ideas from the weekend, supporting men and being there to help them get out of their crap, learn wisdom from various men, and step up for leadership if you want. It’s even better when you get to gather around a fire. And division Rhinos were also fun.
One of the things that men did not like about the old system was when divisions were “blown up” and the emphasis on putting men into the Weekend. Justin created an amazing weekend, but he was not the best businessman. Though many men wanted him to train others to continue the Weekend, I’m told that he did not want to do that. That might have been an example of ego over commitment; I’m not sure of his reasoning for that.
